Once again Mr. Kemal has been struck with his MIT (National Intelligence Organization) obsession.
It resembles people being struck down with migraine attacks.
He saw that the CHP (Republican People’s Party) is faced with a wave of resignations and that upheaval in the party is imminent, so he started accusing MIT.
Mr. Kemal remains insistent even if Rıza Türmen said, “we are faced with enough upheaval as it is. I am not sure if MIT is needed.”
The CHP leader had made a similar move previously as well when the MIT law was on the agenda. Back then it had been revealed that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was in possession of a dossier prepared by Pennsylvania. (The term used to refer to Fethullah Gülen’s organization, based on his current place of residence in the United States.)
The timing of his statement now is significant as well. The CHP leader has made a time sensitive move. Kılıçdaroğlu has targeted MIT just when the MIT law is set to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
I wonder who has prepared the dossier he holds in his hands this time. So, Mr. Kemal, who gave you the dossier? Was it Pennsylvania or was it America, which is Pennsylvania’s master?
Regardless of where this dossier has come from, I believe this claim by Kılıçdaroğlu should be taken seriously. And it should be MIT that takes it most seriously.
If, within a democracy, the main opposition party believes that it is being spied upon by the official intelligence institution of the state and that an operation will be conducted against it by resorting to MIT, then this concern needs to be addressed.
An official from MIT should meet with Kılıçdaroğlu and demand to see the dossier -- if it exists -- from which such claims arise, and should seek a verbal explanation.
I should state that during Hakan Fidan’s reign, we have witnessed a MIT that instead of tracking Kurds has focused on the reconciliation process and one that rescued Turkish hostages from the hands of ISIL. MIT has focused on external operations during Hakan Fidan’s tenure. It is thanks to MIT that we are present in the field in the Middle East.
That is why the parallel structure (the term used to refer to the Gülen-led community) conducted its first operation against MIT Undersecretary Hakan Fidan on Feb. 7.
Feb. 7 portended the coup attempts of Dec. 17 and 25. The main target was not Hakan Fidan but Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
This country has a tradition of military coups. Every coup provides a lesson for the next coup. Ever since the coup of May 27, 1960, the first act of perpetrators of coups has been to take over MIT or to bypass it.
The parallel structure targeted Hakan Fidan on Feb. 7 so that Erdoğan would not have access to information about an impending coup through the severance of his ties to MIT, and also to take over MIT.
MIT in the past has always performed a dual action during periods when a coup has been instigated; starting from the moment “Big Brother” whispers something in its ears.
It wouldn’t inform governments of an impending coup and would create the conditions required for a coup. May 27, 1960, March 12, 1971 and Sept. 12, 1980 are all examples of this.
Of course there is a political reason behind Kılıçdaroğlu’s targeting of MIT.
The CHP leader has killed two birds with one stone.
1-He carried out a counter attack to deflect attention from the corner he has driven himself into with regard to Dersim. He has succeeded in this to an extent.
2-He stopped the resignations within the CHP. Those about to resign had to backtrack so that they wouldn’t be labeled as MIT personnel.
There is another scenario being talked about in Ankara as well in regard to the MIT move made by Kılıçdaroğlu.
The “mastermind,” who took over at the helm of the CHP after eliminating Deniz Baykal with a “cassette” coup, is aiming for a CHP-HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) alliance for the 2015 elections.
This project gained traction following Selahattin Demirtaş’s performance in the presidential elections, which the nationalist segment found acceptable.
The Nişantaşı (an Istanbul neighborhood associated with the elite and wealthy) media has long been ready for this. The garnering of votes by Demirtaş in the Aegean and Marmara regions, where the nationalist presence is strong, removed the psychological barriers that existed. Many nationalists stated that they might vote for Demirtaş.
There is a reason behind the continued persistence of Cemil Bayık, Selahattin Demirtaş and Aysel Tuğluk that the CHP be included in the reconciliation process.
It is not possible for the CHP to be an alternative to the AK Parti (Justice and Development Party) in its current state. The mastermind managing the CHP is now plotting a CHP-HDP alliance for the 2015 elections to obstruct the AK Parti. Their aim is to prevent the AK Parti from gaining a majority that would allow it to amend the Constitution, rather than preventing the AK Parti coming to power on its own. Based on the reports conducted this month by four different polling agencies, the AK Parti retains its strong position of around 47-51 percent of votes. They are worried about a shift to a presidential or semi-presidential system if the compatibility between President Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu creates even more synergy at the polling booths and the AK Parti attains the majority enabling it to amend the Constitution on its own. They want to use the HDP as a buttress to prevent this.
Kılıçdaroğlu provided the clues for such a scenario when he said, “It will be attempted to show the CHP as the party of the Kurds and Alevis.” The first operation was carried out within the CHP. The nationalists who would resist cooperation with the HDP either resigned or had their effectiveness reduced. In this manner, the ground was prepared in the CHP.
So, where does MIT come into all this?
Only Mr. Kemal can answer that.
Hopefully Hakan Fidan is not being seen as an obstacle to this operation due to his conducting of talks with Abdullah Öcalan in regard to the reconciliation process.
This is Ankara after all.
